Light, sound, pressure, faces: the world reaches you all at once, in continuous time, at a bandwidth nothing could store. It is denser than any instrument, any database and any brain can hold.
Noise is just signal you haven't modelled yet.
This page follows one signal from the world into a database, down to a single number, and back out as sound.
Everything I do with data is either compression or expansion. Compression to navigate, expansion to express. I build every stage of that chain, and the number in the middle is the narrowest point of it.
It starts as signal.
01Signal
Light, sound, pressure, faces: the world reaches you all at once, in continuous time, at a bandwidth nothing could store. It is denser than any instrument, any database and any brain can hold.
Noise is just signal you haven't modelled yet.
02Belief
Perception is inference: a prior, updated by evidence, never the thing itself. Your brain doesn't record the signal. It guesses, and keeps correcting the guess.
Resolution: the image sharpens, the decision lands.
03Measurement
Every measurement picks a rate, a resolution and a blind spot. Data starts when someone decides what to write down — and, with it, what not to.
Every measure is a choice.
04Structure
Samples become tables, tables become models, models depend on each other. That graph is the real product. Hundreds of workspaces, thousands of objects, one lineage that has to hold across Dev, Test and Prod.
Tables. Models. Dependencies.
05Inference
With enough structure, the past makes testable claims about what we haven't seen. The curve from the second chapter comes back here as the fan around the line: same shape, now pointed forward.
Then, a forecast.
06Number
A KPI is a whole system compressed until someone can act on it. Every stage so far is underneath it, and none of it is visible.
One number.
07Expansion
Run the pipeline backwards: the number drives frequency, motion and light. The noise from the first chapter is back, and this time it has rhythm.
The last bar of the chart is the first bar of the track.
